Recently, Secretary of State Marco Rubio laid out the Trump administration’s priorities vis-a-vis Iran’s nuclear plans. He reiterated their determination to pre-empt Iran’s quest for weaponising its enriched fissile material. This is a given. No American President would allow Tehran to hold a nuclear dagger pointed at Israel, the Gulf states and US forces in the region. As for the means towards this end, Rubio reiterated the preference for diplomacy first, but noted that should the negotiations fail, not only nuclear facilities could be targeted, but also the Iranian Regime may not survive. Is the Trump Team bluffing its way towards deterrence and diplomacy, and will the Supreme Leader soften his stance and fold to their demands?
